13 Apr Inside the Dream: Bringing On | Shape of Dreams to Life at Black Island Studios
When visionary director Spike Jonze and performance brand On set out to create Shape of Dreams, the ambition was clear: build a cinematic world that blurs the line between movement, imagination, and emotion. Starring Zendaya, the campaign unfolds like a waking dream—intimate, playful, and visually bold.
To realise that vision, the production needed a space that could transform effortlessly, support precise choreography, and allow creativity to flow at scale. The answer was Stage 1-6 at Black Island Studios, West London.
A Cinematic Playground for Creativity
Shape of Dreams is not a traditional sports film. Instead, it explores motion as an emotional language—weightless at times, grounded at others. That meant the environment had to be endlessly adaptable, allowing the creative team to sculpt space, light, and movement in-camera.
Stage 1 provided exactly that: a large, controlled soundstage capable of holding expansive set builds while maintaining the intimacy required for close, performance-led moments. From surreal transitions to meticulously choreographed sequences, the stage became a blank canvas—reshaped continuously to mirror the film’s dreamlike logic.
Why Stage 1 at Black Island Studios
West London has long been a hub for world-class film and commercial production, and Black Island Studios sits at the heart of that ecosystem. Stage 1 offers:
- Scale without compromise – ideal for cinematic commercials that demand both spectacle and detail
- Full environmental control – essential for precision lighting, rhythm, and movement-based storytelling
- A seamless workflow – bringing departments together under one roof to keep creative momentum high
- Availability and location of Camera & Lighting suppliers Panalux & Direct Digital
For a director as detail-driven as Spike Jonze, and a campaign built on nuance and feeling, that level of control was vital.
Performance at the Centre
Zendaya’s presence anchors Shape of Dreams. The film follows her through a series of unfolding moments where physical movement becomes story, thought, and emotion all at once. Capturing that required space—literal and creative—for experimentation.
On Stage 1, choreography, camera movement, and set design were developed in conversation with one another. The result is a film that feels spontaneous yet precisely constructed, playful yet deeply considered.
From West London to a Global Audience
Although the campaign travels through abstract and imagined worlds, its roots are firmly planted in West London. Shot entirely Island Studios, Shape of Dreams demonstrates how a single, well-designed studio space can become many worlds—supporting global brand storytelling without ever leaving the stage.
For Black Island Studios, the project is a powerful example of how commercial filmmaking continues to push cinematic boundaries, and how London remains a key destination for ambitious, culture-shaping work.
Shaping What’s Next
On | Shape of Dreams is more than a campaign—it’s a reminder that movement is expression, and that the right space can unlock extraordinary creativity. We’re proud that Black Island Studios played a role in bringing this dream to life.
